How to Grow Cattleya Orchids

Cattleya orchids generally like light, but not in direct sunlight. A location with filtered light is ideal. If you are growing indoors, choose a window with indirect light.

Choice of Environment

Use an appropriate substrate such as tree bark or sphagnum moss. This allows for good drainage and air circulation around the roots.

Suitable Substrate

Water your Cattleya orchids when the substrate is almost dry. Avoid leaving the roots soggy, as this can lead to rot.

Cattleyas prefer a relatively humid environment. You can increase the humidity around your plants by placing a tray of water near them or using a humidifier.

Fertilize your orchids every two weeks during spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer. During autumn and winter, reduce the frequency.

They usually bloom once a year. They need a change in temperature between day and night to encourage flowering. Keep the plant cooler at night for a few weeks.

After flowering, you can prune the flower stalk above the first node. This stimulates the growth of new shoots. And every 2-3 years change the pot if roots are tight.
